Another SPFL Side Join the Race for Celtic’s January Target

Celtic’s interest in Kilmarnock midfielder David Watson has been bubbling away for weeks, and with the player out of contract in the summer, he’s free to speak to clubs from January.
His situation is beginning to attract more attention across the league, and Celtic, having already missed out on Lennon Miller, might be reluctant to let another top young Scottish talent slip away.
The 20-year-old has already racked up an impressive 118 senior appearances for Killie, becoming a standout performer in Derek McInnes’ side and one of the most highly-rated young players in the Premiership.
His energy, physicality and consistency have made him a regular target for scouts, and Celtic are understood to be monitoring him closely as part of their commitment to strengthening the homegrown core of the squad.
However, competition is increasing.
The Daily Record report that Aberdeen boss Jimmy Thelin is keen to bring Watson to Pittodrie when his deal expires at the end of the season. That interest could intensify the race, especially if Thelin pushes for a pre-contract agreement, with the potential to offer more regular minutes.
Celtic have been tracking a number of emerging Scottish players for potential January and summer moves, and Watson is firmly on that list.
Killie TV commentator Andrew Milligan told CeltsAreHere that he has no doubts that the player would struggle to make the step up to Celtic.
“He could handle it, absolutely. Of course there’s more pressure and expectation, but he knows the league inside out. He’s been playing against these players for years and performing well. He grew up knowing what Celtic is all about, so I think he’d adapt quickly.
“It would be an absolutely huge loss both on and off the pitch. He’s a consistent performer and does whatever the manager asks, whether that’s attacking midfield, holding midfield or even filling in at fullback. He’s a fan favourite, one of the most loved players at the club.”
Whether the club decide to act early or wait until the summer window may depend on outgoing business, squad needs and how the managerial situation settles.
