Bristol Rovers League Two rivals appoint Premier League winner as manager

Former Premier League winner Christian Fuchs has been named as the new manager of Bristol Rovers’ League Two rivals Newport County on a “long-term contract”.

The 39 year old was a key part of the Leicester team that clinched the Premier League title in 2016 and has recently been serving as assistant coach for Major League Soccer side, Charlotte FC.

Newport County decided to part ways with David Hughes following their 1-0 defeat at Shrewsbury Town last Saturday, leaving the Exiles languishing at the bottom of League Two.

“We see Christian as the sort of man to lead our club forward. I believe he matches our ambition and goals for Newport County,” said chairman Huw Jenkins.

“I do feel we can now look forward with a great deal of optimism. We’ll look to improve our current situation in League Two and take things from there.

“Christian is ambitious and wants, one day, to manage in the Premier League. We believe he shares our strong belief in what Newport County can eventually become.”

Under the leadership of Hughes, who took over in the summer, Newport managed to secure only three victories out of 16 League Two matches.

The defeat to Shrewsbury resulted in them falling four points behind safety, leading to Hughes’ departure.

Fuchs, who earned 78 caps for Austria, will embark on his first managerial role with a match against Oldham Athletic this Saturday.

The former left-back announced his retirement from professional football in January 2023, ending his career with Charlotte FC.
