National Wood Flooring Association Partners with Gary Sinise Foundation to Honor Severely Wounded Veterans with Custom Homes

St. Louis, Mo.—The National Wood Flooring Association (NWFA) has marked a significant milestone by providing flooring for its 81st home in collaboration with the Gary Sinise Foundation’s R.I.S.E. program, which focuses on building mortgage-free, custom smart homes for severely wounded veterans and first responders. The latest home dedication took place on June 12 in Bellevue, Idaho, honoring retired U.S. Army Sergeant Matthew Krumwiede. Metropolitan Hardwood Floors, a member of NWFA, generously donated the flooring for this vital project.
Sergeant Krumwiede’s journey began when he enlisted in the Army after graduating from high school, serving in the infantry. His service took a devastating turn while leading his squad during a patrol in Kandahar province, Afghanistan, where he stepped on an improvised explosive device (IED) during a firefight. Despite receiving prompt medical attention, the blast resulted in the loss of both of his legs.
Reflecting on Sergeant Krumwiede’s resilience, Stephanie Owen, CEO of NWFA, shared insights into his recovery: “He endured nearly 50 surgeries following his injury.” His rehabilitation process spanned close to a year, including time spent in intensive care, the burn unit, and ultimately in rehabilitation. Owen emphasized the importance of the new home, stating, “It will eliminate many daily challenges and serve as an enduring reminder of our gratitude for his service. We’re honored to partner with Metropolitan Hardwood Floors to provide beautiful wood floors for his new home.”
In addition to the 81 homes already completed, NWFA is actively working alongside its members to source flooring for 18 additional R.I.S.E. homes that are in various stages of planning and construction. The initiative has seen significant support, with a remarkable 161 NWFA member companies contributing products, logistics, and installation services across the United States. These generous contributions have amassed a total value exceeding $7 million.
