Premier David Eby has issued the following statement marking Transgender Day of Remembrance:
“Today, we remember, mourn and honour transgender, gender-diverse, non-binary and Two-Spirit people who have been killed in acts of targeted violence.
“The trans and gender-diverse community is facing ever-increasing violence and discrimination in our country and around the world, including threats to the right to access life-saving health care and supports.
“Every person is entitled to dignity, respect and safety in British Columbia. Our government is committed to upholding the rights of transgender, gender-diverse, non-binary and Two-Spirit people to build a good life here in British Columbia.
“We mark the Transgender Day of Remembrance by reaffirming that our province is a place where trans people are valued and supported. We will continue to address the barriers that harm trans and gender-diverse people, deliver inclusive programs and supports, and build a province that allows every British Columbian to live safely, authentically and without fear.”
Jennifer Blatherwick, parliamentary secretary for gender equity, said:
“We continue our work to support and uplift our transgender and gender-diverse community, and we affirm our commitment to end the harm against people because of who they are or who they love. Transgender Day of Remembrance is a time to mourn and a time to affirm every person’s right to be who they are, without fear or stigma.”
