Women’s Champions League predictions
Chelsea have been in dynamic form in their last two Women’s Champions League matches, but they face their nemesis Barcelona at Stamford Bridge this week, where a familiar story could unfold.
The Blues have won seven of the last eight Women’s Super League titles and are unbeaten in 34 league games, but they have never captured continental glory and one of the big reasons for that has been that they have tended to bump into the Spaniards at crucial stages.
The Londoners have fallen to the Catalans in the last three years at the semi-final stage and in 2021, when they were managed by Emma Hayes, they lost 4-0 in the Gothenburg final with all four goals arriving in the first 36 minutes.
There is little to suggest the situation will change on Thursday, as despite still not having lost a league game, Chelsea find themselves three points behind Manchester City, having scored 16 goals in nine games, the lowest total of the sides who could be considered as the WSL’s big four.
Sonia Bompastor’s side have scored more than once in just two of their last seven league games, but there is a little less at stake in this league-phase fixture than when these two usually lock horns, which is good news for those looking forward to an entertaining spectacle.
The Blues have a greater goal threat now Australian striker Sam Kerr has recovered from a serious knee injury, but Barca have won 13 of their 14 games this season and conceded just three goals, one of which was a penalty in their only defeat in a 1-0 loss to Sociedad.
Barca have already disposed of Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich 7-1, which looks ominous after they were surprisingly beaten by Arsenal in last season’s final.
Chelsea should give a better account than that, but the visitors could have the edge in a potentially high-scoring game.
