Emmerdale ‘confirms’ new love interest for Lewis amid shock dad secret

Vinny Dingle has connected well with Lewis Barton (Picture: ITV)

Emmerdale’s Lewis Barton (Bradley Riches) is a happy young man. He’s kind, always serves customers in the café with a smile, and enjoys the fact he can slot into conversations quite easily and connect with residents.

This week, however, we began to learn more about him and how his sunny outlook on life can sometimes be displayed to cover something else up.

A few days ago, Kammy Hadiq (Shebz Miah) took it upon himself to organise a housewarming party at Dale View, where Vinny Dingle (Bradley Johnson) now lives with Lewis and Ross Barton (Michael Parr).

Vinny was keen, and so were the many other characters who got word a party was being planned. When Lewis discovered what was going on though, his eagerness was to cover up his anxiety.

Lewis has autism, and finds that loud noises can be triggering for him. It’s why he puts headphones on when he gets overwhelmed in the café. When the environment becomes too much, listening to music distracts Lewis enough until he’s calmed down.

The party at Dale View saw Lewis interact with many of his friends and fellow village residents, but it was after the event where it became really clear that he was finding things difficult.

While Vinny nursed a hangover, Lewis’ bright personality started to change. In tonight’s episode, the noise in the café became too much for him and he ran out in a panic.

At home, Lewis was supported by Nicola King (Nicola Wheeler), but she opted for giving him space to process his thoughts, rather than encourage him to open up.

Nicola later discovered that Kev Townsend (Chris Coghill) is Lewis’ biological father. Protective of her business partner and new friend, Nicola sensed that the news would cause Lewis to spiral and chose to keep it to herself.

When Vinny returned home, it didn’t take him long to work out that something was wrong with his mate.

Lewis explained that when things become too much, it feels like all of the energy has drained out of him.

He said that when things are really bad, noises are louder than usual, colours seem too bright, and even his own heartbeat can sound and feel too intense.

Vinny listened with intent and for a moment, it looked as though he was considering whether he likes Lewis more than just a friend.

Vinny sensed what he was doing and snapped out of it quite quickly. It’s clear he has a strong connection with Lewis, but could it turn into something more?
