Friends, Paul Kelly has only gone and done it again. In his big return to the Like A Version studio, the nation’s storytelling dad has tackled the other influential Australian artist – Kylie Minogue.
It’s been a hot minute since he was behind the mic recording a cover, with his first entry in 2007 and a special appearance in 2016 with A.B. Original. But now he’s back with a full band, and he’s having an absolute ball.
“I’m a Kylie Minogue fan, who isn’t?” Paul Kelly said.
“I like the lyrics but musically I thought it was really strong, I thought it would really suit the band. So that’s why we chose it. It’s got a great sort of gear change and we just love playing it.”
Keeping it in the same key as Kylie (an unusual approach for a cover), Paul pushed to the higher reaches of his vocal range to meet Kylie in her lower register.
“She was sort of singing differently on that record,” he said.
“She had more of a sort of conversational thing, so I was happy I could do it in the same key.”
For an artist with a monster 30 albums under his belt and no sign of slowing down, it’s an honour to have Paul Kelly return to the Like A Version studio.
