Would you believe that in 2025 we would have a Like A Version cover of Kylie Minogue by Paul Kelly? It’s Aus Music Month, baby, anything can happen.
A noted Kylie fan, the nation’s storytelling uncle found choosing ‘Did It Again’ to be a simple one – it’s fun, it’s experimental and, crucially, it’s in a key he can reach.
“I like the lyrics but musically I thought it was really strong, I thought it would really suit the band,” he said.
“So that’s why we chose it. It’s got a great sort of gear change and we just love playing it.”
Paul started off crafting his cover alone, before bringing his arrangements, chords and ideas to his wider band. Some people he’d been playing music with for as long as the Kylie song itself has existed.
“I rehearsed it at home by myself and made a little chord chart, because there’s a few different ways to play the chords,” he said.
“And then I took it to the band and we rehearsed it together, which took a long time just to get that push and pull. And of course they changed some of my chords, and we had a few arguments and we got it done.
“We like arguing… I just want to point that out.”
The result is a glorious, folk-leaning version of Kylie’s 1997 alt-pop hit, proving that Paul Kelly’s still got a few tricks up his sleeve.
