FOLEY, Ala. – The Marshall University Volleyball team (15-15) dropped its Sun Belt Conference Tournament First Round match to Troy 3-1 (16-25, 25-20, 27-25, 25-13) on Thursday evening in Foley, Alabama.
“Proud doesn’t even begin to describe how we as a staff feel about this group. Earning a spot in the tournament is a huge accomplishment, and these seniors have built a foundation that will be hard to follow,” Herd Volleyball Head Coach Heather Stout said. “Credit to Troy—they were defensively sound tonight and made it tough for us to get our offense going. Our team battled, just not consistently enough on the offensive end. Still, we’re excited for what we’re building and for this returning group. The future is bright for our herd.”
The Herd came out firing, dominating the first set 25-16 behind balanced offense and a strong presence at the net. However, Troy rebounded in the second, using a late run to pull ahead and even the match.
The pivotal third set was tightly contested, with both teams trading points into extra time. Marshall battled to a 24-24 tie, but Troy closed out the set 27-25, swinging the momentum in its favor. The Trojans closed out the contest with a 25-13 win in the deciding fourth set.
Marshall’s defense kept the team in contention throughout, highlighted by a standout performance from Beatrice Ciccarelli, who recorded a season-high 11 blocks along with three kills, one ace and one dig. Emma Barnett paced the Herd offensively with 12 kills, while adding seven digs and five blocks. Logan Henderson contributed seven kills and three blocks, and Elli Barry tallied four kills with a .333 hitting percentage.
Audrey Geer led the back row with 11 digs and chipped in five blocks, helping Marshall finish with 18 team blocks in the match.
