Cowboy Bebop Continues to Conquer the Streaming Charts
Directed by Shinichirō Watanabe and written by Keiko Nobumoto, Cowboy Bebop premiered back in 1998 and quickly cemented its place as the then-latest hit anime. The series follows a ragtag crew of bounty hunters, including the instantly iconic Spike Spiegel, Jet Black, Faye Valentine, Edward, and data dog Ein. Cowboy Bebop enjoyed widespread acclaim following its release and has been largely credited with paving the way for the rise in popularity of anime in the West throughout the late ’90s and early 2000s.
While the original series only ran for 26 episodes, with a single animated feature film set between the final two episodes to pad out its story, Cowboy Bebop continues to be an ever-present fixture in pop culture. As of the time of writing, Cowboy Bebop holds a perfect 100% “Certified Fresh” rating via review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, as well as an audience-generated “Popcornmeter” score of 95%, further solidifying its status as one of the best anime in the history of the medium.

37 Years Later, This 91% Rated Sci-Fi Anime Masterpiece Officially Cracks the iTunes Top 3
One of the greatest sci-fi anime films of all time is taking over one of the biggest video-on-demand charts, and fans couldn’t be happier.
Unfortunately, not every Cowboy Bebop release has been a hit. In 2021, Netflix released its live-action streaming adaptation of the series, starring John Cho as Spike Spiegel, Danielle Pineda as Faye Valentine, Mustafa Shakir as Jet Black, and Eden Perkins as Ed. The series’ opening season, which consisted of 10 episodes, received decidedly lukewarm reviews from both critics and audiences, leading to a meager 45% “Fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Despite its star-studded leading cast and the strength of one of the biggest anime franchises behind it, Netflix’s Cowboy Bebop simply failed to impress most viewers. Less than three weeks after making its premiere on the streaming platform, Netflix’s Cowboy Bebop was canceled. Shortly after the series’ cancellation was announced, showrunner André Nemec gave fans a sense of what storylines they could have expected from a second season, including Ed’s personal journey, Jet Black’s malfunctions with his prosthetic arm, and Faye uncovering her true identity.
Cowboy Bebop is currently available via VOD on iTunes.
