Urgent recall notice issued for deli meats over contamination risk

Customers have been urged to return a number sliced deli meats over “severe illness” fears.
A recall alert from Food Standards Australia New Zealand warned customers who had bought 1kg packages of Gotzinger Smallgoods brand sliced silverside, roast beef, 4×4 sandwich ham, champagne ham and provincial ham.
Food Standards warns the products “may have been available for sale in retail outlets and butcher shops in NSW and QLD”.

Food Standards issued the alert over concerns the meats had been contaminated by listeria monocytogenes, which causes a listeria infection.
“Listeria monocytogenes may cause severe illness in pregnant women, unborn babies, neonates, the elderly and immunocompromised individuals,” Food Standards said.
“The general population can also become ill from consuming food contaminated with listeria monocytogenes.”

Symptoms of a listeria infection affecting the digestive system include diarrhea, upset stomach and vomiting, according to the Mayo Clinic.
“Healthy people rarely become very ill from listeria infection but the disease can be fatal to unborn babies, newborns and people with weakened immune systems,” the Mayo Clinic says.
“Prompt antibiotic treatment can help curb the effects of listeria infection.”
These symptoms often start within a day of eating tainted food. They tend to go away within a few days.
The alert warns consumers “should not eat this product” and instead “return the products to the place of purchase for a full refund”.
All 1kg sliced roast beef packages have been recalled while the below products have alerts for various use-by dates:
- Sliced silverside 1kg: All use by dates up to and including 20/12/2025.
- 4×4 sandwich ham 1kg: All use by dates up to and including 13/12/2025.
- Champagne ham sliced 1kg: All use by dates up to and including 17/12/2025.
- Provincial ham sliced 1kg: All use by dates up to and including 15/12/2025.
‘Limited and unlikely public availability’
A spokesperson for Gotzinger Smallgoods said the only product to have had listeria detected was the 1kg packages of sliced roast beef and recalled the other products “as per the advice of Food Safety Authorities”.
“These recalled sliced products are produced separately from our other ranges, and no other Gotzinger Smallgoods products are affected,” a Gotzinger spokesperson told 7NEWS.com.au
“We have worked closely with distributors to remove product from their channels.”
They added the products are for “food service only” and would have had “limited and unlikely public availability”.
“If consumers were to come across any of these products, we advise them not to consume said products and to contact the place of purchase immediately,” the spokesperson said.
“Any products in question are sliced and separate to all other Gotzinger Smallgoods products.
“We would like to thank our distributors who immediately removed products from the market.
“We remain fully committed to the highest food safety standards and are reviewing our processes to ensure that our products and operations remain an exemplar in the industry.”
Correction: An earlier version of this article stated one of the above recalled items was sold at Woolworths, however Gotzinger Smallgoods and Woolworths have confirmed this was not the case.
