How Roman Kemp’s Childhood Wish Saved His Family from Tragedy During 2004 Tsunami

Shirlie Kemp recently shared a significant and alarming experience that her family narrowly escaped, attributing much of their fortune to her son, Roman Kemp. The incident took place in 2004 while the family was planning a holiday trip. At the time, Shirlie, who is recognized for her role as a former vocalist for the iconic band Wham!, and her husband, Martin Kemp of Spandau Ballet, were considering a vacation to Thailand.

Their plans took an unexpected turn when nine-year-old Roman expressed a strong desire to visit the Bahamas instead. His enthusiasm was contagious as he was particularly excited about the prospect of experiencing an extravagant water slide that glided through waters known to be home to sharks. Despite Shirlie’s vision of a soul-searching journey in Thailand, Roman’s passion ultimately led to a shift in their travel plans, which would later be viewed as a fortunate decision.

In a tragic twist of fate, that same year, a devastating tsunami struck Thailand, claiming the lives of approximately 200,000 individuals across 14 countries, including Sri Lanka and Indonesia. Reflecting on this turn of events, Shirlie expressed her deep gratitude for having listened to Roman, as their vacation could have taken a life-altering course.

The Kemp family’s adventures have often involved their fair share of risks. Martin recounted a particularly harrowing experience during a rally in Vietnam, where Shirlie lost control of their Mini, resulting in the vehicle overturning in a rice paddy. The incident led to Martin being hospitalized after he found himself trapped inside the car. Shirlie managed to unbuckle and exit, but Martin’s hand remained caught.

His recollection of being upside down and fearing for his fingers struck a nerve, as he anxiously awaited rescue. Local workers came to his aid, ultimately transporting him to a basic medical facility for treatment. The duo attributed their predicament to a navigational error sparked by Martin’s knee bumping the sat-nav.

Presently, as the family continues to navigate the ups and downs of life, Martin can be seen appearing on ITV One’s popular reality show, “I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here!” Meanwhile, Roman is participating in a new adventure, competing on “Celebrity Race Across the World” alongside his sister, Harleymoon Kemp. The sibling pair is currently racing toward Honduras, exemplifying the same adventurous spirit that characterized their family vacations.

Shirlie’s reflections on these experiences shine a light on the unpredictable nature of travel and underscore the significance of family decisions that can lead to life-altering outcomes. The Kemp family’s journey continues to unfold, serving as a source of inspiration as they face each challenge together.
