A train on the affected line has since been removed and a temporary repair carried out

Engineers will be working through the night to fix damaged overhead lines at Glasgow Central station which caused a full day of rail disruption.

Services have been cancelled and delayed in the south of Glasgow, to Paisley and Ayrshire and on cross-border routes to London, Liverpool and Manchester.

Earlier Network Rail said it had carried out a temporary repair and removed a train from platform 11, enabling it to reopen the majority of the platforms.

However, Ross Moran, Network Rail Scotland’s route director, said disruption to services would continue for the rest of the day.

ScotRail said it was working to get services back on schedule between Glasgow Central and Ayrshire/Inverclyde.

There is now an hourly service from Glasgow Central to East Kilbride and ScotRail is reintroducing trains travelling from Glasgow Central to Newton, Neilston and Paisley Canal.

It is hoped that services will resume as normal on Friday, though Network Rail said it would provide updates if this changed.

The damaged lines at Glasgow Central have affected routes from the station’s high level platforms

Mr Moran said: “Our teams were quick to respond and understand the extent of the damage and repairs required. Platforms have reopened and services are resuming. However, this work will continue tonight to fully complete the repairs.

“I’d like to thank passengers for their patience and understanding while we complete this work.

“Restoring normal service as quickly as possible is our top priority, and we appreciate your support as we get the job done.”

He urged passengers to check with rail operators before travelling.

ScotRail said no passengers were on the train when electric wires were damaged near Glasgow Central’s high level platforms.

Services via Glasgow Central low-level have not been affected.

Engineers have now made repairs to the damaged wires at Glengarnock

Phil Campbell, ScotRail’s customer operations director, said: “We’re sorry to customers who experienced disruption to their journey today as a result of this incident.

“While Network Rail engineers continue their work to complete repairs to the overhead wires, our teams are focused on keeping people moving wherever possible and providing clear information to help customers plan their journeys.

“We’d like to thank customers for their patience as services return to normal.”

He said anyone delayed by 30 minutes or more could claim compensation through the Delay Repay Guarantee via the ScotRail website or app.

Passengers with ScotRail tickets can also use them at no extra cost on any alternative route to their destination, or on McGills or Stagecoach buses. They can also be used on JMB Travel route 41 between Motherwell and Lanark.

Updates will be available on the National Rail website.
