History

OGDEN, Utah – UT Arlington men’s basketball (4-2) fell to Campbell (3-3) 71-67 in UTA’s opening game of the Junction City Jam on Friday afternoon from Dee Events Center on the campus of host Weber State. The Mavs had an eight-point lead at 63-55 with 5:23 to go, but couldn’t hold off the Fighting Camels.

Senior forward Raysean Seamster led all Mavs in scoring with 16, despite struggling from the field (7-for-18). Sophomore big man Cameron Jackson had a career day, scoring 15 points on 6-of-7 shooting and also grabbing eight rebounds for the Mavs. Senior guard Marcell McCreary finished with 14 points for the third time in his past four games.

UTA led by as many as 10 in the opening half, thanks to a strong start from Seamster, who had 10 himself in the first stanza. Seamster, a preseason All-WAC selection, has scored in double figures in all six of the Mavs games this season, after doing so 23 times in 30 appearances last year. Jackson also played a big part in the opening half, chipping in with six points, three boards and a block.

The Mavs, who entered play as one of the nation’s best defensive squads statistically, held the Fighting Camels to just 37.0% from the field in the first half, and UTA cashed in with 10 points off of seven Camel turnovers. UTA did most of its damage offensively in the paint, with 18 of its 31 points coming from inside.

UTA stretched its lead to nine midway through the second half when Seamster finished off a pass from Jackson to extend to a 55-46 advantage. After a Marcus Rigsby, Jr. layup through traffic made it 63-55, Campbell went on a 9-0 run to take the lead for the first time since they led 9-7 at the 16:33 mark of the opening period.

Sophomore guard Cash Chavis’ driving layup with 58.7 seconds remaining put the Mavs in front again at 65-64, but the Camels scored the next seven of the final nine points to seize the win, lifted by a big corner three from Jeremiah Johnson, who finished with 12 for Campbell.

UTA is back in action tomorrow night when the Mavs take on Weber State (2-3) at 8 p.m. CT. Weber State defeated Campbell 91-85 in the opening game of the Junction City Jam on Wednesday night. Fans can watch the Mavs take on the Wildcats live on ESPN+, and listen live on the Varsity Network App with the Voice of the Mavs, Josh Sours.
