Gerard Butler survives the worst timeline in exclusive new look at Greenland 2

Genuinely, Greenland 2: Migration, despite arriving in the first week of January, might be my most anticipated movie of 2026. (No, that doesn’t give me a ton to look forward to for the rest of the year, but them’s the breaks.) It’s rare for a disaster movie to pick up where it left off and actually check in on what happens next, let alone become a franchise. Greenland 2 promises to give Gerard Butler’s John Garrity his Silo moment, beholding a world devastated by a comet impact. A new clip, debuting exclusively on Polygon, gives you a taste of what hell on Earth might really look like.

Greenland 2 picks up five years after the events of the first film and finds the Garrity family facing a world that never healed the way they hoped. In the original Greenland, John, Allison, and their son Nathan survived a 48-hour scramble to reach the safety of underground bunkers as a comet shattered Earth’s surface. The film ended on a glimmer of optimism, the promise that the dust-choked atmosphere might clear and life could begin anew. Uh… kinda happened? Maybe?

Living underground has clearly taken a toll on John, his fam, and on everyone sealed away. But rumors of a refuge — a place with clean air and clean water — relight that flicker of hope. That sanctuary lies in southern France, inside the massive crater left by the comet’s impact. To get there, the family must leave the bunker that once saved them and embark on a dangerous journey across a still-hostile Earth. Unfortunately, the planet now has radiation storms.

Greenland dropped in the summer of 2020 to acclaim and decent box office, not that anyone should remember anything that happened in the summer of 2020. So it feels a long time coming — almost appropriately to the story — for Greenland 2 to finally surface. Director Ric Roman Waugh, who has quietly made some of the best action movies over the last decade, is back in the saddle with his Butler, and in this case, a January release date is their sweet spot. This is my flicker of hope for the future.

Greenland 2 hits theaters on Jan. 9, 2026.
