Russell leads Verstappen in damp session, McLaren pair last after technical trouble

George Russell set the quickest time in a rain-affected final practice session for the Las Vegas Grand Prix.
However the McLaren drivers ended the session at the bottom of the times as both were told to pit due to technical trouble on their cars.
The session began on a damp track following rain earlier in the day in Las Vegas. Oscar Piastri was the first driver to join the track, opting for a set of intermediate tyres, and the track gradually filled with almost all the other cars.
The Aston Martin pair were notable exceptions, as was Nico Hulkenberg in the Sauber, the trio seemingly preferring to limit the number of laps they did on the intermediate tyres.
Despite the treacherous conditions, all of the drivers kept their cars out of the barriers. Lewis Hamilton had a near-miss with Liam Lawson at turn 14, but the stewards ruled no action was necessary.
Lap times were over 12 seconds off yesterday’s best when the session began. They improved slowly over the course of the session but the track offered so little grip drivers were reluctant to risk switching to slicks too soon.
Lando Norris was the first driver to take the gamble, and after a tentative couple of laps began to make gains, triggering the rest to follow him. Hulkenberg and the Aston Martin drivers waited until the final quarter of an hour to set their first laps.

Trouble struck the McLaren drivers soon afterwards. First Norris, then Piastri were summoned into the pits due to a loss of telemetry from their MCL39s.
As a result the two championship leaders missed the best of the track conditions and sank to the bottom of the times. Russell took the quickest time away from Max Verstappen with his last lap, then the Red Bull driver went off at turn 12 as he tried to improve on his final run, complaining about being forced off-line by traffic.
Russell therefore ended the session fastest ahead of Verstappen. Alexander Albon was third for Williams ahead of Isack Hadjar and Hamilton.
The session ran without a repeat of the trouble with manhole covers which led second practice to be red-flagged twice. The track operators welded 15 covers around the circuit between the two sessions to guard against any further problems.
