Bipartisan group of House lawmakers pitch a two year extension for ACA subsidies

A group of House members came forward with bipartisan legislation on Friday to extend the subsidies on the Affordable Care Act for two years.

The bill was brought forward by Democratic Reps. Tom Suozzi (New York), Josh Gottheimer (New Jersey) and GOP Reps. Jeff Hurd (Colorado) and Don Bacon (Nebraska).

“I see it clearly that we need an interim plan because we don’t want to see premiums skyrocket,” Bacon said, according to The Hill newspaper.

“We’ll probably need a deeper plan for the longer term but we’re not going to do that before Dec. 31.”

Gottheimer said that Republicans and Democrats have to come together with a bipartisan solution before the Obamacare subsidies expire.

“It’s time to come together, Democrats and Republicans, put aside the partisan BS, and deliver a real solution that will cut health insurance premiums,” Gottheimer said. “Whether it’s this solution or another, failure is not an option.”

The premiums are expected to increase in 2026 unless there is an extension.

After the government shutdown ended, Senate Majority Leader John Thune promised Democrats to let them vote on a preferred bill to extend the subsidies.

Last month, Georgia GOP Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene broke away from her party on the issue and called for the subsidies issue to be addressed.
