Liverpool are losing to Nottingham Forest

The Premier League have dropped two statements after Nottingham Forest’s opening goal against Liverpool was allowed to stand. The incident came from a corner, which the Reds did not deal with before Murillo slammed it into the bottom corner.

VAR checked if the 34th-minute goal was offside. Dan Ndoye was blocking Alisson’s vision, but perhaps in line with the last man and the goal stood.

It means Arne Slot’s side found themselves 1-0 down at half-time. And the Premier League’s match centre account on X (Twitter) have now released a statement to explain why the goal at Anfield was allowed to stand.

“The referee’s call of goal was checked and confirmed by VAR – with it deemed that Ndoye was not in the line of vision of Allison and did not make an action that impacted an opponent,” the statement said.

Forest thought they had doubled their lead moments later with Jesus controlling a cross well and finishing brilliantly. However, referee Andy Madley disallowed it for handball.

“The referee’s call of no goal was checked and confirmed by VAR – with it deemed that Jesus accidentally handled the ball before scoring,” a second statement read.

However, there was no second reprieve for Liverpool with Sean Dyche’s men doubling their lead moments into the second half.

Neco Williams cut back from the left and Savona ran on to sidefoot home inside the box.

Slot admitted pre-match that he isn’t focusing on Liverpool’s title ambitions amid a difficult season for his side.

He said: “I think I’ve said many times, at this moment in time i’m not even thinking about talking about it.

“Actually we did this last season when we were top of the league, it’s just about the next game. I’ve said many times last season and this season as well, the best way to judge a league table is after 38 games.

“The next best thing in my opinion is after 19 games. Let’s see where we are then. At this moment of time the only focus is on winning games of football, which is the same as last season.”
