Police say they’ve still not found a car and any possible occupants after reports of a vehicle being submerged in the River Trent in Nottingham.
Emergency services were called following reports that a car was in the river near Wilford Suspension Bridge, West Bridgford, just after 5am on Saturday, November 15,
In an update issued on Wednesday, November 19, Nottinghamshire Police said officers had still not been able to find the car or any of its possible occupants.
However, the force said detectives had traced the vehicle’s owner, whose family have been informed and are being supported by officers.
Police have spoken to witnesses and trawled through CCTV as part of their investigation, but efforts by an underwater search team have been hampered by the recent fast flow of the river, meaning they are unable to dive.
The team have instead searched the river using sonar equipment – technology that uses sound waves to detect, locate and map objects underwater.
Detective Sergeant Rachel Mayfield said: “Since this investigation launched, we’ve been working hard to locate the car, any possible occupants and establish what exactly has led to the vehicle going into the water.
“Unfortunately, the river is running very high and fast due to the high amounts of rainfall we’ve had recently, so the dive team are currently not able to enter the water.
“Once there is an update, we will provide one. Until then, I would ask that people do not speculate on what has happened.”
