How Gary Neville’s Man United wage compares to current players, Jamie Carragher left in disbelief

Gary Neville has been transparent about the highest wages he was paid during his time at Manchester United.

During his 19 years as a Manchester United player, including five as club captain, Gary Neville won a total of 20 trophies.

Recently, Neville was inducted into the Hall of Fame for his service to United. A member of the iconic Class of ’92, he spent his entire career at Old Trafford and became a core part of some of Sir Alex Ferguson’s best teams.

Jamie Carragher shocked by Gary Neville’s Man Utd wage

Speaking on the latest episode of The Overlap, Neville revealed: “That was 2009, my last contract at the club, I was on £1.75 million basic.

“Massively underpaid,” Carragher said.

“Oh yeah, I always was. I used to just say, ‘yeah I’m happy, let’s get on with it’.” Neville replied.

“They’ve bullied you for the last 20 years,” Carragher argued. “You should not be on that. I know it’s a lot of money, but that’s £30,000 per week in your prime in 2001.”

Neville’s £1.75m wages equates to around £33,000 per week. In the same interview, Wayne Rooney revealed he earned £325,000 per week in his biggest United deal.

The financial landscape of football has shifted completely since Neville’s playing days, with players now paid astronomical figures.

Casemiro is United’s highest earner on a wage of around £350,000 per week. The five-time Champions League winner will have had to accept a cut with no European football in 2025/26, however.

United right-back Diogo Dalot earns £85,000 per week – more than twice what Neville earned in his biggest contract.

For context, the player with the closest comparable wage to Neville is Altay Bayindir, who reportedly earns around £35,000 per week.
