Stewards explain why they did not penalise Lawson for colliding with Piastri

The Las Vegas Grand Prix stewards have explained why Liam Lawson was not penalised for his first-lap collision with Oscar Piastri.
The pair tangled in turn one on the first lap of the race. Lawson hit the side of Piastri’s McLaren, forcing him wide. Although Lawson got ahead of Piastri it proved temporary as he had sustained front wing damage and had to pit moments later. However Lawson’s team mate Isack Hadjar took advantage of the opportunity to pass the McLaren and remained ahead for many laps.
The stewards decided Lawson was to blame for the collision but felt there were mitigating circumstances which meant he should not be penalised.
“Car 30 [Lawson] made a move to the right and collided with car 81 [Piastri],” the stewards noted, “however in mitigation car 30 made the move to avoid colliding with the rear of car 63 [Russell] whose driver locked up to avoid a collision with car 55 [Sainz].
“In view of this and the fact that this was on lap one [at] turn one, we determine no further action [should be taken].”
The stewards will investigate another first-corner collision between Gabriel Bortoleto and Lance Stroll after the race.
