Grand Slam of Darts predictions

This year’s Grand Slam has proved beyond doubt that darts is increasingly becoming a young man’s game.

Four of the eight players in action in Wolverhampton on Thursday night are 25 or younger – Michael van Gerwen is the elder statesman at a positively veteran 36 – and that youthful exuberance should be on full display when Wessel Nijman takes on world champion Luke Littler in the undisputed game of the night.

Defending Grand Slam king Littler dropped only five legs in group wins over Karel Sedlacek, Connor Scutt and Daryl Gurney, but he faces a much tougher challenge against in-form Nijman.

The Dutch ace has reached at least the quarter-finals of the last six Players Championship events, winning two, and has won 31 of his last 38 matches in all.

He is also a rare beast on the PDC Tour; a player who Littler has yet to take to the cleaners. Nijman won the first of their three meetings and has been beaten by just two legs in each of their subsequent two matches, so this looks set to be nip and tuck throughout.

With that in mind, backing the outsider with a 3.5-leg start on the handicap looks a sensible strategy.

There was more than a hint of the Michael van Gerwen of old as the Green Machine defeated Gary Anderson 5-2 in a winner-takes-all showdown on Tuesday, and MvG can build on that success against his former World Cup partner Danny Noppert.

Van Gerwen has won four of the Dutch pair’s last five meetings and Noppert has navigated a particularly weak group to reach this point.

Both players have impressed with their scoring in the West Midlands, hitting 18 180s between them in the group stage, and Van Gerwen could hold sway in a heavy-scoring encounter.
