Erin Andrews once made the difficult decision to stop covering a sport she still holds close to her heart.

Over a decorated broadcasting career that’s spanned the better part of two decades, Andrews has worked no shortage of major sporting events across the country. While the FOX Sports analyst has most recently become a household name thanks to her reporting on the NFL, it wasn’t long ago that she appeared destined to cover another sport altogether.

Following an eight-year stint with ESPN, Andrews decided to take her talents to FOX in July 2012. Upon joining the network, she expressed her excitement to dive headfirst into coverage of baseball — a sport her late grandfather greatly enjoyed watching.

“My grandfather died before the Red Sox won [their first World Series in 86 years in 2004],” Andrews said at the time. “I wasn’t able to cover that World Series, but my dad and I were there for the ring ceremony. I got a hat that day and put it on top of my grandfather’s grave.

“That’s part of the reason I’m so passionate about being able to be a part of FOX’s Major League Baseball coverage, which broadcasts the biggest games and the postseason.”

Sure enough, Andrews got her wish in the ensuing years with FOX Sports, covering back-to-back World Series in 2014 and 2015. Yet in her 2016 contract extension with the company, she explicitly asked to step away from her MLB role and focus instead on being an NFL sideline reporter.

“We appreciate Erin’s great contributions to our MLB coverage,” FOX president of production John Entz said.

“With her commitments beyond Fox Sports, we fully support Erin’s decision to focus her role here at FOX on the NFL.”

On an episode of her ‘Calm Down’ podcast with co-host Charissa Thompson, Andrews conceded that she never felt fully comfortable transitioning to baseball coverage once the postseason rolled around.

“I discovered that arriving at the end of the year after, you know, covering football and then jumping [in], I felt like I was doing a disservice to people that were watching at home,” she explained.

“I felt like there were other people that had covered it all throughout the year that knew the ins and outs. That’s how I think about with football.

“If you’re not covering football all year long, and then you’re jumping into the playoffs, you don’t know the storylines. You don’t know what’s going on in the meetings.”

While working alongside Ken Rosenthal — who’s served as FOX Sports’ lead MLB insider since 2005 — Andrews questioned if she truly had what it took to cover baseball despite not covering the sport in depth for much of the season.

“I just felt like I was not giving what I could give, and what other people could do, like a Kenny Rosenthal,” Andrews continued. “I almost felt stupid. And the catch-up was really, really hard.”
