The president of the United States Donald Trump has not yet followed through on its decision to apply an additional 10 percent linear tariff on Canadian goods, announced at the end of October in response to an anti-tariff ad by the province of Ontario during the World Series.
The announcement had alarmed Canadian exporters, especially in the automotive sector, but so far no official instructions have been issued to U.S. customs and importers. Sources suggest that the Trump administration has decided to postpone the increase—which would have raised tariffs on Canadian goods to 45 percent—while keeping the threat as leverage for future negotiations.
Canadian Prime Minister Carney’s personal intervention in Asia and his official apology for the ad may have helped ease tensions. Trade talks between the US and Canada will resume, but the process remains complex, US Ambassador to Ottawa Pete Hoekstra warned, without clarifying whether the new tariffs will actually be imposed.
