Doctor Strange Star Benedict Cumberbatch Shares Which Character Is ‘More Fun’ To Play, Hero or Villain
Doctor Strange actor Benedict Cumberbatch says playing a villain is more fun than playing a hero.

In a recent Reddit AMA, a fan asked him whether it more fun to play a hero, or a villain. Cumberbatch said, “I think it’s definitely more fun to play a villain, but if you have a character arc in a hero that challenges them to be compromised with obstacles that are delightful and as brilliant as the best villains can be, it’s often fun to play the hero. Inhabiting a villain is a license to take vicarious thrills in the worst of our nature letting rip.”

Cumberbatch has played Stephen Strange since 2016’s Doctor Strange, directed by Scott Derrickson. He returned for the sequel, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, in 2022. Recently, a report revealed that the third Doctor Strange movie is in early development at Marvel Studios, with Cumberbatch more involved behind the scenes.
Across the MCU, Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange has appeared in Thor: Ragnarok, Spider-Man: No Way Home, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame.
The actor is also expected to reprise his role in upcoming Avengers films. Earlier this year, Cumberbatch said that Doctor Strange might skip Avengers: Doomsday but play a “central role” in Avengers: Secret Wars. He later clarified, saying, “I got that wrong, I am in the next one.”
Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled to release on December 18, 2026. Avengers: Secret Wars will follow on December 17, 2027.
