Motorcyclist hit stop sign, pole after being thrown from bike in NW Calgary crash

A man in his 40s is fighting for his life in hospital following a motorcycle crash in northwest Calgary on Friday morning.
Police say the crash happened around 10:40 a.m. at the intersection of 34 Avenue and 77 Street NW in the community of Bowness.
Investigators believe a Honda motorcycle was travelling southbound on 34 Avenue at a high rate of speed when it struck a concrete traffic island near the intersection.
The impact threw the rider from the motorcycle. He then struck a stop sign, a concrete pole, and then a parked 2014 Jeep Patriot.
The motorcycle itself continued, colliding with a parked 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt before coming to rest on the roadway. Neither of the parked vehicles was occupied at the time.
Emergency crews rushed the rider, a man in his 40s, to the hospital, where he remains in critical condition. Police say speed and alcohol are being investigated as possible factors in the crash.
The intersection of 34 Avenue NW and 77 Street NW was closed for several hours for the investigation. It has since reopened.
Police are asking anyone with information about the incident to call police at 403-266-1234 or provide tips anonymously through Crime Stoppers.
