Met Éireann pinpoints break from freezing temps as milder front moves in

A break from frosty, icy mornings this week

Met Éireann forecasters are tracking a bout of milder weather expected across Ireland after a week of freezing conditions and even snow in parts of the country last week. The national forecaster has pinpointed nights this week where the mercury is not expected to plunge below freezing – giving us a break from frosty, icy mornings.

On Wednesday and Thursday, conditions will be much milder than recent bitterly cold days. The lowest nighttime temperatures will be around 9 to 12 degrees. By Thursday, we could see daytime highs in the mid-teens. According to Met Éireann’s extended range forecast, issued on Friday, high pressure centred to the southwest of Ireland “will lead to a good lot of dry weather early in the week.”

It won’t last long, though, as by Friday we can expect colder spells again, as temperatures will struggle past the single digits, with hailstorms possible over the weekend too.

For today, we can look forward to a mostly dry day with sunny spells across Munster and only a few isolated showers in parts. After a bright and mostly dry start to the week, conditions will become duller and wetter, but milder, in the middle of the week, before cooling again with a mix of sunshine and showers later in the week. Here’s the latest for Cork and Munster:

Today – Any lingering rain in the southwest will clear through the morning, giving way to a bright, breezy and mostly dry day with good spells of sunshine and just some isolated showers. Highest temperatures of 7 to 11 degrees with moderate to fresh northwesterly winds, easing in the evening. Tonight will be a cold night with long clear spells. It will be mostly dry apart from a few isolated showers. Lowest temperatures of -1 to 4 degrees with light to moderate northwesterly winds.

Tomorrow – After a dry and bright morning for many with good spells of sunshine, it will gradually turn cloudier from the west through the afternoon and evening. Outbreaks of rain and drizzle will push in from the Atlantic in the evening. Highest temperatures of 6 to 10 degrees with a light, variable or westerly breeze. It will be a cloudy night with rain and drizzle in the west at first and slowly spreading eastwards across the country. Some eastern coastal areas may remain dry until early morning. Lowest temperatures of 1 to 7 degrees. It will be coldest in the east, but temperatures will increase through the night. Light to moderate southerly winds will freshen with the arrival of the rain and drizzle.

Wednesday – A dull day with widespread rain in the morning, clearing eastwards, giving way to more patchy outbreaks of drizzle and misty conditions. Relatively mild with the highest temperatures of 11 to 13 degrees. Moderate to fresh southerly winds will veer westerly with the clearance of the rain. Rain and drizzle will move in from the Atlantic and spread eastwards across the country overnight. Mild with the lowest temperatures of 9 to 12 degrees with moderate to fresh southwesterly winds.Thursday – Starting off cloudy with a band of rain moving eastwards across the country through the morning and afternoon. As the rain clears, it will be followed by a mix of sunny spells and showers. Relatively mild with the highest temperatures of 12 to 14 degrees. Southwesterly winds with be moderate to fresh and gusty, stronger on Atlantic coasts.Friday and the weekend – Widespread showers, some of which will be heavy and with a possibility of hail and thunder. There will be some sunny spells too. It will be colder than the previous two days, with the highest temperatures of 8 to 11 degrees, with moderate to fresh southwesterly winds, stronger on Atlantic coasts. The weekend will bring a mix of sunshine and showers, some of which will be heavy, with a possibility of hail on Saturday, followed by a wetter day on Sunday.
