There are several storylines going into the tournament. Seton Hall and NC State, meeting for the first time since the Pirates’ high-scoring NCAA tournament win in 2018, bring very different kinds of Maui experience. Seton Hall alum and head coach Shaheen Holloway return to the tournament for the first time in over two decades, while the Wolfpack make their Maui debut under first-year head coach Will Wade. Wade arrives fresh off back-to-back Southland titles and a March upset of Clemson at McNeese State, and he’s no stranger to Maui himself, having coached LSU there in 2017.
Elsewhere in the bracket, USC and Boise State’s first-ever meeting features two programs with proven coaches who know the island well. Eric Musselman, now in his second year with the Trojans, last guided Arkansas in Maui in 2022. Leon Rice, the winningest coach in Boise State history, was part of three Gonzaga trips to the Maui — including the Zags’ dramatic overtime championship in 2009. Washington State makes its own Maui debut against host Chaminade, whose 1982 upset of No. 1 Virginia inspired the tournament’s creation.
The day closes with a matchup between two former champions, Arizona State and Texas, led by head coaches with deep Maui ties. Bobby Hurley won co-MVP honors as a player in 1992, while Sean Miller returns to Maui after three appearances with Arizona, including a title run in 2014.
