Chelsea vs Barcelona preview
Chelsea and Barcelona developed an intense Champions League rivalry in the early years of the 21st century and Tuesday’s league-phase clash at Stamford Bridge should be another cracker.
The teams met ten times between 2005 and 2012, winning two knockout ties apiece, and the highlights reel features memorable goals from Barca stars Ronaldinho and Andres Iniesta plus Chelsea’s John Terry, Frank Lampard, Ramires and Fernando Torres.
Their most recent meeting came in March 2018, when Lionel Messi scored three times in Barca’s 4-1 aggregate last-16 win, but Chelsea go into the rematch in fine form.
Lamine Yamal and Raphinha inspired Barca’s run to the semi-finals last season when they lost 7-6 on aggregate to Inter in a sensational tie.
Would the manner of that defeat lead to a more pragmatic approach from coach Hansi Flick? Not a chance. Barca kicked off this term’s European campaign with a 2-1 win at Newcastle and a 2-1 home defeat to injury-hit holders Paris Saint-Germain.
They thumped ten-man Olympiakos 6-1 on matchday three before showcasing their strengths and weaknesses in a 3-3 draw at Club Brugge in which they hit the woodwork three times.
Chelsea flopped as 1-3 favourites in a 2-2 draw away to Qarabag but they have been ruthless in the Premier League, winning five of their last six games including Saturday’s 2-0 victory at Burnley.
Facing Barcelona three days after Burnley might be a bit of a culture shock but Enzo Maresca’s men are worthy favourites to take three points.
A depleted Barca midfield unit may well leave their defence even more exposed than usual and the Blues are coping well without injured forward Cole Palmer.
Keeping a clean sheet against Barcelona could be beyond Chelsea but they are an appealing bet to win with both teams scoring.
Barca’s last three away trips in La Liga produced a 4-1 defeat at Sevilla, a 2-1 loss at Real Madrid and a 4-2 win at Celta Vigo, who scored twice in the first half.
Caicedo’s destructive qualities may be required
Moises Caicedo was rested for Chelsea’s league fixture at Burnley but he should be at the heart of the action on Tuesday.
Caicedo, booked in three of his last four appearances in all competitions, could have a busy night breaking up Barca’s counter-attacks and the odd tactical foul may be required.
In-form Fernandez could stun Barca early on
His midfield partner Enzo Fernandez is worth a bet to open the scoring as he averages a healthy 2.2 shots per game in the Premier League this season.
On Monday, Maresca described the Argentina international as “a fundamental part of what we are trying to do” and the in-form Fernandez, who scored at Turf Moor on Saturday, should be on penalties for the Blues.

Both teams to score
There have been goals at both ends in ten of Barcelona’s last 11 matches in all competitions including a chaotic 3-3 draw at Club Brugge on matchday four of the Champions League.
Lamine Yamal to assist a goal
Yamal’s duel with Spain teammate Marc Cucurella is a fascinating subplot and the brilliant Barca winger has registered ten assists in 13 starts for club and country this season.
Enzo Fernandez to have one or more shots on target
The Chelsea midfielder scored his fourth Premier League goal of the campaign at Burnley on Saturday and converted a first-half penalty against Ajax in his last home Champions League outing.
