Emergency warning as category 4 cyclone Fina inches closer to WA

Residents in the northernmost part of Western Australia have been urged to shelter immediately as severe Tropical Cyclone Fina inches closer to making landfall.

Emergency WA has issued an emergency warning for the Cambridge Gulf to north of Faraway Bay as the category 4 storm carries a threat to lives and homes.

Residents in the area are advised that it is too late to evacuate and to shelter indoors now.

A cyclone watch and act warning is in place for west of Faraway Bay to east of the Governor Islands, north of Oombulgurri and the north-western parts of the Cambridge Gulf, with residents advised to prepare for the impacts of the cyclone.

Residents in Beadell, west of Governor Islands to Throughton Island and the south-eastern parts of the Cambridge Gulf to the Western Australia and Northern Territory border are urged to monitor conditions. 

Fina has strengthened to a severe category 4 storm with gusts of 260km/h impacting the north-east Kimberley coast near the state borders. 

The system is currently about 60 kilometres north=east of Berkeley River Mouth and 160 kilometres east of Kalumburu.

It is travelling at a slow 6km/h south-west across the southern Joseph Bonaparte Gulf after moving away from Darwin and the Northern Territory coast over the weekend.

Fina is expected to cross the Western Australian coast between King George River Mouth and Berkeley River Mouth this afternoon and evening.

Fina is carrying very destructive wind gusts and heavy to locally intense rainfall, which may spark flash flooding on the northeast Kimberley coast.

The storm is expected to curve inland tomorrow, but is forecast to weaken to a category 3 storm by then.

Gusts and rainfall are expected to also ease tomorrow.
