Manchester City vs Bayer Leverkusen preview

Manchester City’s Premier League title hopes took a massive dent with a 2-1 defeat to Newcastle on Saturday but Pep Guardiola’s men should regain the winning thread when they host Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League tonight.

The Citizens allowed their game against Newcastle to become an end-to-end and physical affair, something which suited Eddie Howe’s side. Despite their recent success, questions still remain about the defensive solidity of Manchester City, who have just one clean sheet from their last six outings. That came in their 3-0 win over a struggling Liverpool team, who were hard done by when Virgil Van Dijk’s header was disallowed.

Guardiola is slowly trying to embrace the more physical, transition-centred style of football which has become par for the course in English football over the last season, but teething problems still remain.

His team were too open on the counter against Newcastle and a midfield trio of Phil Foden, Nico Gonzalez and Bernardo Silva struggled with the sheer size and strength of Newcastle’s midfield.

Whatever their issues have been domestically, however, City have been almost perfect in their Champions League campaign.

The hosts have won three of their four games and were denied a 12-point haul as Monaco scored a controversial late penalty to secure a 2-2 draw last month.

They are taking on a Bayer Leverkusen side who have had a chaotic campaign. Erik Ten Hag lasted just three games before being replaced by Kasper Hjulmand and the Danish coach has done a decent job of steadying the ship.

A 1-0 away win over Benfica in their last European game was crucial after a 7-2 humiliation by Barcelona before that.

The visitors have also climbed back up to third in the Bundesliga after scoring nine goals in their last two league games.

A 3-0 loss to Bayern Munich has been the only time that Leverkusen have failed to score this term and they can get on the scoresheet in Manchester. However the attacking might of Erling Haaland and the Citizens should be too strong and the hosts are fancied to come out on top.

Foden could be key to home side

Phil Foden has been operating in a deeper role this season but he has still managed two goals in three Champions League games. He could add to that tally against a Bayer Leverkusen side who have been leaky at the back.

Comfortable win for Citizens looks likely

Manchester City have recorded a pair of 3-1 wins over Bournemouth and Swansea in the last month and a repeat of that scoreline looks like a big runner when they face this Bayer Leverkusen team. While there have been some outrageously high-scoring games in the Champions League this season, a City team bruised from their trip to St James’ Park would be happy with a two-goal cushion.

Over 3.5 goals

Goals have been almost a given with Bayer Leverkusen, particularly on the road, and their end-to-end style of play could lead to this game producing four or more goals.

Manchester City to win

Manchester City have been hard to beat at home and can continue that run against a Bayer Leverkusen side who have been outclassed by Bayern Munich and Paris-Saint Germain.

Jarell Quansah to be shown a card

A suspension to Edmond Tapsoba means that former Liverpool defender Jarell Quansah is likely to start for the visitors and he has already been booked three times in nine Bundesliga games this season.
