Marseille vs Newcastle preview

Newcastle delighted the Toon Army on Saturday with a superb 2-1 home victory over Manchester City, but they have been unable to replicate their excellent performances at St James’ Park on their travels.

Eddie Howe’s side have reached the halfway stage of the Champions League in eighth position, having won three games on the spin following an opening 2-1 defeat at home to Barcelona.

However, they will need to start playing better on the road if they are to remain in the top eight and claim automatic passage to the last 16.

Newcastle’s only away victory in seven attempts this season came on matchday two of the Champions League, when they cruised to a 4-0 success at Union Saint-Gilloise, and three of their final four league-phase fixtures are away from Tyneside, starting with a tough test against Roberto De Zerbi’s Marseille.

Marseille are just two points adrift of PSG at the top of Ligue 1, having won nine of 13 league matches including a 1-0 triumph over the European champions, and they are the top scorers in France’s top flight with 33 goals.

It’s not been quite as good for De Zerbi’s side in the Champions League. Marseille are 25th at the midway point after narrow losses away to Real Madrid (1-2) and Sporting (1-2) and at home to Atalanta (0-1).

A resounding 4-0 home win over Ajax in September is the exception, but Marseille will certainly need the second half of the league phase to be more productive than the first if they want to avoid an early exit.

Nonetheless, OM have been competitive in all of their European outings and they should have a spring in their step following a stunning 5-1 win at Nice on Saturday.

Former Manchester United striker Mason Greenwood, who has been a huge success since joining the club in July 2024, was on target twice on the Cote d’Azur and he currently tops the Ligue 1 scoring charts with ten goals.

Greenwood is receiving excellent support from veteran forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Brazilian attacker Igor Paixao, who has starred in the Champions League, in a potent three-pronged attack.

Newcastle will be acutely aware of Marseille’s threat and they know how to be resilient, as they showed at the weekend when keeping a lid on Manchester City goal machine Erling Haaland.

However, the Magpies have yet to play with the same energy and intensity on their travels and they may find it difficult to avoid a fourth straight away defeat.

Paixao can make an impact

Paixao has been a huge hit since joining Marseille from Feyenoord during the summer transfer window.

The Brazilian winger has shone in the league phase, delivering three goals and one assist, and Newcastle may have to keep tabs on Paixao more than any other home player.

French side’s firepower could hold the key

Marseille have suffered three single-goal losses in this season’s Champions League, but the fine margins could be in their favour on matchday five.

De Zerbi’s side are scoring goals for fun, although a clean sheet could elude them against a Newcastle side who have found the net in 12 consecutive games.

Marseille vs Newcastle Bet Builder

Mason Greenwood anytime goalscorer

Greenwood has been playing some of the best football of his career in the south of France and looks overpriced to stay on the scoring trail.

Over 2.5 goals

Marseille are under pressure to go all out for victory and their positive approach can lead to a high-scoring outcome.

Dan Burn to be shown a card

Burn served a domestic ban at the weekend but he will maintain his aggressive style of defending and could collect his second caution of the Champions League campaign.
