Tata Motors PV targets 20-25% increase in SUV market share with Sierra: MD

Tata Motors PV is targeting to capture 20-25% of India’s SUV market with its newest mid size SUV, Tata Sierra, launched at an introductory price of ₹ 11.49 lakh on Tuesday, November 25.

Shailesh Chandra, CEO and MD of Tata Motors PV told CNBC TV18 that the company currently holds about 16-17% market share in the SUV segment. “We hope that with Sierra, our market share in SUV segment can go up to 20% plus, say anywhere between 20 to 25%,” he added.

Chandra explained that the autombile company’s portfolio was designed in a way that when a customer buys their first car, say a Tiago, they have an option of upgrading (it) in the same Tata showroom (for their whole life cycle). So you have full continuity, right from Tiago to Harrier Safari.”

However, he said, there was a missing piece” in the company’s portfolio, “which was the mid size SUV, which Sierra very well fits in and gives the portfolio continuity that we wanted.”Read also: Domestic passenger vehicle volumes to grow by 5% this fiscal: Tata Motors PV CEO

The model is expected to bring in a “very different” customer base as it belongs to a very fast growing segment. Chandra said, “nearly 40 to 45,000 cars get sold in this (mid size SUV) segment.”

Therefore,  Sierra, which has made a come back after 28 years, “has actually plugged a big gap, and it has come with a very differentiated offering at a very compelling price. So it has a big role to play in our portfolio,” Chandra added.

The company is “committed” to bring in an EV (electronic) version of the mid size SUV and is expected to be out in the first half of the next financial year.

Chandra, who is also the CEO of Tata Motors PV, said November might see double-digit growth, driven by the recent GST reforms, and added that he is “optimistic” about the second half of the financial year witnessing a double-digit expansion after a decline in the first half.

However, he cautioned that “at a year level, it might be still a single digit growth, (around) 5%.”
