High winds, colder days ahead for Campbell County

GILLETTE, Wyo. — Strong winds and colder temperatures are expected to continue across Campbell County on Tuesday as a powerful weather system pushes east, according to the National Weather Service in Rapid City, South Dakota.

High winds remain the main concern through this afternoon, with gusts reaching 65–70 mph across portions of western South Dakota and northeastern Wyoming, including Campbell County. The NWS in Rapid City says winds will gradually weaken from west to east after 3–5 p.m.

Light snow was moving out of the area early Tuesday, though forecasters noted some lingering flurries could hang on in higher elevations. No significant accumulation is expected around Gillette, but another inch or two is possible in the Black Hills.

Temperatures will stay colder than normal through Thanksgiving, running about 5–10 degrees below average. Mostly dry conditions are expected Wednesday and Thanksgiving Day, though a few light snow showers may dust the region.

A more active pattern moves in Friday through early next week, bringing near-daily chances for light snow across Campbell County. Forecasters say the setup is complicated and confidence varies, but the best chance for accumulating snow remains in the Black Hills. Gillette and surrounding areas could still see periods of light snow.

Even colder air will arrive this weekend, with highs expected in the teens and 20s and overnight lows dipping close to zero.

High winds are expected to continue impacting local travel and outdoor work until conditions ease late this afternoon.
