Labor to slash $5.6b from public service

The Albanese government is targeting savings across the public service of up to $5.6 billion a year, in what experts warn could be one of the biggest cost-cutting exercises in Canberra in decades.

The covert push to trim and reprioritise departmental budgets comes as the cost of running the public service has grown 38 per cent in four years under Labor, reaching $111 billion this financial year.
