DC Mayor Muriel Bowser announces she will not run for re-election

Bowser made the announcement in a video posted on social media.

“It has been the honor of my life to be your Mayor. Together, we have built a legacy of success of which I am intensely proud. With a grateful heart, I am announcing that I will not seek a fourth term,” the post read.
The mayor also released a letter to the city about her decision. The text of the letter mirrors her video.
“For 10 years, you and I have worked together on an ambitious agenda to restore faith in our government and ensure that every D.C. resident gets the fair shot they deserve,” she said.
D.C. Council chair Phil Mendelson released a statement on the mayor’s announcement.
“I am grateful to Mayor Bowser for her years of service to this city and its residents. I am also sympathetic to the stresses and commitments required to lead the District’s government, especially at this time. I wish her nothing but success in her next chapter,” the statement read.
Many have wondered whether Bowser would seek a fourth term in office. In October, 7News reported that several D.C. councilmembers were considering a bid for the office.
Sources close to Councilman Kenyan McDuffie told 7News he is looking into the possibility of running. They said his decision and consideration were sparked by community interest.
Councilwoman Janeese Lewis George is another name reportedly considering a run for the mayor’s seat.
Another name that voters could see on the ballot is Ivan Cloyd, according to a news release. Cloyd bills himself as “a community leader, real estate developer, and media personality.” In a statement, Cloyd is said to be “strongly considering a run for Mayor of the District of Columbia should current Mayor Muriel Bowser decide not to seek another term.”
