Magnitude 5.8 earthquake jolts Kumamoto

A powerful 5.8 magnitude earthquake hit Kumamoto Prefecture on Tuesday at around 6:01 p.m., the Japan Meteorological Agency said.

The temblor measured up to an upper 5, the fourth-highest level on Japan’s 10-point seismic intensity scale, and occurred at a depth of 9 kilometers. No tsunami warning was issued.

A woman in her 70s in Kumamoto sustained minor injuries and was transported to a medical center, according to the Kumamoto Nichi Nichi Shimbun, citing the Aso City Hall.

In areas that experienced strong shaking, there is an increased risk of rockfalls and landslides, the weather agency said, warning people to be careful of future seismic activity and rainfall conditions.

The agency is also calling on residents to be prepared for quakes of a similar strength for the next week or so.
