Sheff Utd owners ‘launched offer’ to buy hated rivals Sheff Weds with MERGER suggested

Sheffield United’s American owners made a bold inquiry regarding the purchase of arch rivals Sheffield Wednesday as the Championship’s bottom side seek a new owner

Sheffield Wednesday are still looking for a new owner

Sheffield United’s American owners made an audacious inquiry regarding the potential purchase of Steel City rivals Sheffield Wednesday.

The two sides are in the Championship relegation zone and have a fierce rivalry, but representatives for COH Sports were among 80 parties to make initial calls to Wednesday’s administrators over the past month or so. The American-based consortium only completed their takeover at Sheffield United less than a year ago.

The Telegraph reports that the prospect of the two rivals belonging to the same stable can effectively be ruled out. Sources have played down the likelihood of any further inquiries from COH.

COH, led by businessmen Steven Rosen and Helmy Eltoukhy, ended Saudi Arabian Prince Abdullah Bin Mosaad Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud’s five-year spell as owner of the Blades when they bought the club last December. Rosen is the founder and chairman of Resilience Capital Partners, while Eltoukhy chairs biotech company Guardant Health.

One interested party incredibly suggested an extraordinary merger between the two rival clubs. Former Newcastle owner Mike Ashley is thought to be keeping tabs on a sale that will likely to exceed £40million. Neither he, nor COH, are among the handful of suitors to make formal offers as of yet.

US-based billionaire investor John McEvoy is among the leading candidates to eventually take charge of the Owls. McEvoy’s portfolio includes a minority stake in talent management giant Various Artists, which has Sheffield band Reverend and the Makers on its books.

Despite Sheffield Wednesday being bottom of the Championship there is still plenty of interest in the former Premier League side. They look set for the drop to League One, which is hugely influenced by the 12-point deduction they received after being put into administration in October.

The Football League is still investigating alleged breaches of its financial regulations and has not ruled out docking points again this season.

Wednesday saw former boss Danny Rohl leave in the summer, leaving former Bolton striker Henrik Pedersen to come in and attempt to bring some calm. He’s been working with a tiny squad, often forcing players to play three times a week with rotation not a possibility.

On Sunday, the Blades claimed the city’s bragging rights when they won 3-0 at Hillsborough. It saw them close to within two points of safety after a slow start whilst Wednesday are on minus four points with one win to their name and are already 19 points behind Oxford United in 21st.
