Tributes as body discovered in harbour confirmed to be police officer | ITV News

Tributes have been paid to a “greatly respected” South Wales Police officer whose body was discovered in Bristol city centre’s harbour.
PC Reehan Akhtar, 28, from Llanelli was on a night out with friends in the city over the weekend. He became subject to a missing persons’ search after being last seen in the early hours of Sunday.
On Monday, Avon and Somerset Police confirmed that a body was recovered from the water during their searches and that PC Akhtar’s family had been offered support by a specialist family liaison officer.
On the same day, the police force said they were treating his death as unexplained, but not suspicious, and will be preparing a file for the coroner.
South Wales Police has now issued its own tribute to him saying that “it is with immense sadness that we confirm the news of the passing of our colleague and friend PC 8650 Rehaan Akhtar.”
PC Akhtar started his police career with South Wales Police in 2021 as a PCSO in Cardiff. He then went on to train as a Police Officer and in September 2023 went to join the local team in Swansea as a Police Constable.
South Wales Police’s Chief Constable Jeremy Vaughan said: “I was shocked and saddened to learn of Rehaan’s passing.
“At this difficult time, our hearts go out to Rehaan’s family and friends, and we will do all we can to support them.
“During his time with South Wales Police he served our communities with pride and professionalism as both a PCSO and a Police Officer. I know he was greatly respected and liked by his colleagues and those he met as part of his day-to-day duties.
“On behalf of South Wales Police, I offer our heartfelt condolences to all of those impacted by his passing.”
Llanelli-based Calsonic Kansei Swiss Valley who PC Akhtar played football for have also issued their own tribute to him on social media.
“It is with great sadness that we share the devastating news of the passing of Rehaan Akhtar.
“Rehaan was a committed 1st Team player, a passionate footballer, and a valued presence both on and off the pitch. He was a friend to many, known for his positivity, determination, and love for the game.
“Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences are with Rehaan’s family, friends and all who knew him during this difficult time.
“He will be deeply missed by everyone at CKSV and beyond.”
