Imran Khan health rumours viral amid reports of ex-Pak PM in solitary confinement

Imran Khan, the former Pakistan Prime Minister currently lodged in a jail in Rawalpindi, has become a top trend on social media over unverified claims of his death. The rumours began after one particular handle – called Afghan Times – claimed to have information from sources that the former Pakistan PM had been “murdered” in Rawalpindi’s Adiala jail. The claims – all unsubstantiated and unverified – have not been confirmed by any credible agency or department.
The rumours of today come soon after it was reported that Imran Khan’s family was not being allowed to meet him in jail and that the former Pakistan PM was being held in solitary confinement. It was also reported that his sisters, sitting in protest outside the Adiala jail, were manhandled as they demanded a meeting with him.
Imran Khan’s three sisters – Noreen, Aleema, and Uzma alleged that the political leader has been “brutally assaulted” inside the Adiala jail, where he has often complained of mistreatment and harassment by jail authorities.
The 72-year-old cricketer-turned-politician has been in jail since 2023 after being convicted in a web of corruption cases.
Following the unverified reports of Khan’s death on Wednesday, reports also said that thousands of supporters of Pakistan’s only World Cup-winning captain stormed the Rawalpindi jail.
Social media platforms like X (formerly Twitter) were flooded with several posts claiming that Imran Khan has been murdered in confinement. The news spread like a wildfire, as users soon trended #ImranKhan with a long thread of posts suggesting that the rumours may be true.
“There are reports and rumors claiming that #ImranKhan has been killed in prison by the Pakistani military. It is also said that Imran Khan family has stated that they have not been allowed to meet him for about a month. Where is Imran khan?,” asked an X user.
Some users also shared a purported video showing Imran Khan lying on a stretcher, but chances are that these clips are doctored.
It all started with a “breaking news” posted by an X handle by the name “Afghanistan Time”, which reported that “Imran Khan has allegedly been mysteriously killed”.
“A credible source from Pakistan has confirmed to Afghanistan Times that PTI Chairman Imran Khan has allegedly been mysteriously killed, and his body has been moved out of the prison,” Afghanistan Times wrote in the post.
Several locally-run X handles also shared pictures purportedly showing a large crowd of people, claiming they were Imran Khan’s supporters who stormed the Adiala jail and held protests.
Some Indian news channels’ X posts also quoted the Afghanistan Times but also put out a disclaimer, saying, “The claim has not yet been independently verified”.
‘MISTREATMENT’ CLAIMS FUEL MURDER RUMOURS
In July, complaining of “harsh treatment” in jail, Imran Khan appealed to his party members to hold Army chief Field Marshal Asim Munir accountable if anything happened to him.
The former Prime Minister, who was voted out of power through a no-confidence motion, claimed a colonel and the jail superintendent were carrying out actions on the “orders of Asim Munir”.
Imran Khan’s recent claims of mistreatment and harassment inside the jail have added fuel to the fire, with many fearing that he might just have been killed.
SISTERS MANHANDLED, DENIED WEEKLY MEETING
Last week, police allegedly dragged Imran Khan’s sisters, manhandled them and took them into custody. The incident happened when the sisters, denied a weekly meeting with Khan, staged a 10-hour sit-in outside the prison, drawing significant media attention.
They claimed that the former PM was being held in solitary confinement in inhumane conditions and sought his release.
However, it was not without drama. PTI claimed that a woman police officer dragged Noreen by her hair across the road and pushed her to the ground, and manhandled the other two sisters.
