Talking turkey, experts at the ready to help with holiday cooking

WORCESTER, Mass. – Hosting for the holidays can get stressful and as millions of Americans get ready to prepare the centerpiece of the their Thanksgiving table this Thursday, turkey experts are at the ready to offer help.

The Butterball Turkey Talk-Line is open through December 24.

Now in it’s 44th year, the Turkey Talk-Line has more than 50 experts who answer questions and lend support as Thanksgiving hosts begin to menu plan, shop, prep, budget, cook and more.

The experts at Butterball, like registered dietician Samantha Woulfe, say one of the most common mistakes – and something they get a lot of calls about this week – comes before the bird goes in the oven.

“One of the most common things that people may not know is how to actually thaw turkey safely. So we get lots of questions about that,” Woulfe said. “Some people will try to thaw outside, or we’ve had people try to find a shower or a bathtub. But really the safest way is either in the refrigerator or that cold water method..”

Butterball recomends allowing at least one day of thawing for every 4lbs of turkey if you’re using the refridgerator method.

And you can expect 30 minutes of thawing per pound of turkey if you’re going with the cold water method.
