San Jose Earthquakes hold open tryouts in Salinas for MLS Next Pro team

Soccer enthusiasts gathered at the Salinas Regional Soccer Complex recently as the San Jose Earthquakes conducted open tryouts for their MLS Next Pro second team, known as The Town FC. The atmosphere buzzed with excitement and anticipation, as aspiring players sought a chance to secure a spot on a team that could potentially launch them into the Earthquakes’ main roster.

The day unfolded with a rigorous format, featuring two intense 50-minute matches that tested the skills and endurance of the participants. Each player faced immense pressure to perform, showcasing significant talent on the field.

Shea Salinas, a well-respected legend of the Earthquakes, took charge of overseeing the tryouts. His experience and insights added a layer of professionalism to the proceedings. Salinas emphasized the importance of providing budding players with opportunities to pursue their dreams. “I visit a lot of schools and ask kids, ‘Who here wants to be a professional soccer player?’ and 90% of them raise their hand. So giving a pathway, an opportunity for those kids is really important,” he remarked.

Reflecting on his own journey, Salinas recalled moments of doubt and affirmation. “It’s the little times when you play here and there, and someone picks you up and they’re like, ‘Wow, you got talent.’ And then you kind of question yourself. It’s a journey of self-discovery,” he shared.
