Wrexham boss Parkinson on Championship being so tight ahead of Bristol City test

Wrexham secured a battling goalless draw away to Ipswich Town on Saturday to extend the unbeaten run to six league games and leave the Reds 14th in the division, just three points away from the play-offs.

Hull City currently occupy sixth position but they are only six points ahead of Blackburn Rovers, who are 18th and complete The Racecourse double-header when they are the visitors on Saturday.

The second tier is living up to its billing as being hugely competitive and with Parkinson pleased with the progress made, he hopes to make the most of back-to-back home games.

“The division is so tight, isn’t it? I think everybody in every interview is saying the same,” he said.

“Coventry have kind of pulled away at the top, Sheffield Wednesday with the points deduction are at the bottom and the rest of the division is very tight.

“That’s what makes it such a great spectacle of the games because they’re very competitive, no quarter given at all and everybody can beat anyone on the day.

“It’s a great week for us. It started off well against Ipswich, I was pleased with how we looked physically coming on the back of the international break, and now we look to build on that tomorrow.”

Bristol City, beaten 6-0 on aggregate against Sheffield United in the play-off semi-finals last season, go into tonight’s game sitting fourth in the standings.

The Robins have launched another promotion challenge but Parkinson prefers to focus on his own side who have won the last three league games at The Racecourse, including a 3-2 win over runaway leaders Coventry as the last unbeaten record in the EFL came to an end on October 31.

“They (Bristol City) had a good season last year, got in the play-offs and obviously a change of manager, and they’ve picked up where they left off,” he said.

“I’ve lost count of the number of years they’ve been in the Championship so it’s a long time in the division and as you’d expect, they are one of the strongest teams.

“They’ve got some good players but most teams have, and so have we.

“Ipswich had some very talented, attacking players and I thought we dealt with them very well and we’re going to have to be right on song as a team, individually and collectively, to deal with those players.

“But that’s great, that’s what we relish and the challenge is can we come off the pitch and I’ll be speaking about our players rather than theirs.”

Parkinson will check on wing-back Libby Cacace (calf) and striker Kieffer Moore who both missed the Ipswich stalemate, while midfielder Lewis O’Brien serves a one-match ban.

“They’re making good progress. It’s a quick turnaround and we need some more options out there,” he added.

“Like always we’ll give players every chance to prove their fitness but the lads who played Saturday did well.”
