A man, believed to be aged in his 20s, was flown to Newcastle’s John Hunter Hospital with “quite a serious leg injury”, a NSW Ambulance spokesman said.

Witnesses assisted the pair before paramedics arrived but the woman died at the scene.

She is believed to be aged in her 20s.

The beach has been closed and the species of shark is yet to be identified.

Department of Primary Industries teams are en route and drone surveillance is being set up, Surf Life Saving NSW chief executive Steven Pearce told 2GB.

“Tragically, one young female has been fatally killed by a shark, and there’s another male that’s been flown to hospital.

“This area is so remote, there’s no life guarding services up there at all,” Pearce said.
