Woman killed, man injured in shark attack

A woman has died and a man is seriously injured after being mauled by a shark on the NSW Mid North Coast.

Emergency services were called to a beach at Crowdy Bay about 6.30am on Thursday after reports of a shark attack.

Witnesses tried to save the pair while waiting for paramedics to arrive, but the woman died at the scene.

The woman, believed to be aged in her 20s, is yet to be formally identified.

A man, alsobelieved to be aged in his 20s, was seriously injured and was flown to John Hunter Hospitalin a critical condition.

The beach has been closed while officers liaise with experts from the Department of Primary Industries to determine which species of shark was involved.

Surf Life Saving NSW chief executive Steven Pearce said the incident occurred at “quite a remote location” and the “details are still a little bit sparse”.

“These incidents are horrific for everyone, and unfortunately, we’ve had a few this year already,” he said per The Daily Telegraph.

“We’re thinking of all of those people dealing with this at the moment.”
