Coinbase Identifies Perp-RWA and Prop-AMM as Promising Sectors

Coinbase Ventures released its investment forecast for 2026, highlighting four key sectors for unicorns.

Coinbase’s venture arm released its investment forecast for 2026. Analysts highlighted four key sectors where they anticipate the emergence of unicorn companies.

Perp-RWA

Experts predicted a shift from simple tokenization to the creation of synthetic instruments. Perp-RWA will provide traders with quick access to off-chain markets without the need to own the underlying asset.

Coinbase Ventures expects “perpification of everything”: from private company stocks to economic data. Investors will be able to hedge risks through instruments tied to oil, inflation, credit spreads, and volatility.

Specialized Exchanges and Terminals

The focus is on alternative market-making models (prop-AMM). Such solutions, especially within the Solana ecosystem, “protect liquidity providers from toxic order flow through the use of aggregators.”

Analysts also noted the segment of prediction markets. The emergence of professional intermediary terminals is expected, consolidating liquidity from various platforms into a single interface with advanced trading tools.

Next-Generation DeFi

Coinbase Ventures identified three development vectors for decentralized finance:

  • composability: integrating lending and derivatives will allow yield on collateral while maintaining leveraged positions;
  • unsecured lending: using on-chain reputation and off-chain data will open a trillion-dollar consumer credit market;
  • privacy: implementing technologies like ZKP and FHE is necessary for institutions to conceal trading strategies and for regular users to protect financial history.

AI and Robotics

Coinbase Ventures is betting on data collection for training robots through DePIN networks. This will address the shortage of datasets on physical object interactions.

Another important narrative is the concept of Proof of Humanity. Solutions combining biometrics and cryptographic signatures will be required to distinguish between humans and artificial intelligence.

Growth is also expected in AI-agent-based tools for writing and auditing smart contracts.

Back in November, the blog author WuBlockchain, under the pseudonym shisi.eth, criticized the Coinbase-supported micropayment protocol x402.
