What happened after the catch enhanced Rashee Rice’s contribution to Chiefs’ win

If Patrick Mahomes is happy, so is wide receiver Rashee Rice.
And Mahomes was pleased by both the Chiefs’ 23-20 overtime victory over the Indianapolis Colts and the play of Rice, who logged 141 receiving yards in Sunday’s Week 12 contest
“There’s nothing like making (number) 15 happy when you complete a catch and turn upfield,” Rice said of Mahomes, the Chiefs’ star quarterback.
The pitch-and-catch with an upfield turn became a major source of offense for the Chiefs as they overcame a 20-9 deficit in the fourth quarter of Sunday’s game.
Until the final play of the third quarter, Rice had three receptions for nine yards. On that snap, Rice floated to the middle of the field, hauled in a pass and covered 41 yards.
That possession ended with a Kareem Hunt fumble, but Rice was just getting started.

In the fourth quarter, with the Chiefs trailing 20-17, Mahomes — throwing out of his own end zone — again found Rice in the middle. The gain went for 47.
Rice’s overhand grab on a fourth-and-3 for 19 yards kept alive what would become KC’s game-tying field-goal drive. And his 21-yard reception in overtime set up the game-winning field goal, with Harrison Butker nailing both clutch kicks.
According to NextGenStats, Rice totalled 106 yards after the catch for the game.
Rashee Rice hauled in 6 receptions for 136 yards in the seams in the Chiefs’ Week 12 win over the Colts, the 2nd-most of any player in a game this season.
Rice also totaled a career-high 103 YAC, gaining 10+ YAC on three separate plays in the 2nd half.#INDvsKC | #ChiefsKingdom pic.twitter.com/IaGL1A1qUB

“You can hit him at 18-20 yards and all of a sudden that’s 40 yards, that’s 30 yards, and then you can hit him on a shallow cross and he gets a big first down and gets 10-15 yards,” Mahomes said. “He does a lot. He can beat you down the field, but he can also beat you intermediate, and he’s going to continue to get better and better.”
Oh, and Rice caught the two-point conversion from Mahomes on the fourth-quarter touchdown that started the Chiefs’ rally.
“He’s a guy who stepped up and made plays happen,” Mahomes said. “He’s got the mentality that he wants to be great. He wants to be that guy, in that moment.”

Rice also is playing like he’s making up for some lost time. He missed the season’s first six games, sitting out due to an NFL suspension for his role in a 2024 car crash.
Sunday marked his fifth game this season and, by yards, it was also the most productive of his three years in a Chiefs uniform.
“Listen, we’re glad he’s back,” Chiefs head coach Andy Reid said. “He’s big and strong, fast, all that stuff. Tough to bring down.”
