Steven Guilbeault is resigning as a member of the Liberal cabinet after Prime Minister Mark Carney announced an energy deal with Alberta that opens the door to increased oil and gas production and support for a new pipeline to the West Coast.

Three sources confirmed the resignation. The Globe is not identifying the sources as they were not authorized to comment publicly on the matter.

Mr. Guilbeault is a career environmentalist who has been serving as the Minister of Canadian Identity and Culture.

He was first elected as an MP in 2019 and is a former environment minister.

More to come.
