Dak Prescott and the Dallas Cowboys are hosting the Kansas City Chiefs in a Thanksgiving Day game that’s crucial to both teams’ playoff hopes. When Prescott drops back to pass you may notice a patch on his jersey his teammates don’t have, and if you’re wondering what it signifies, you’ve come to the right place.
To commemorate his Walter Payton Man of the Year award in 2022, Prescott wears a trophy silhouette patch along with every other active recipient. The Walter Payton Man of the Year award is given to the player who had the most “significant positive impact on his community,” according to the NFL, with each team submitting one nomination and only one of the 32 claiming the award annually.
Only five Walter Payton Man of the Year winners are on active rosters this season. In addition to Prescott, the following players have won the honor: Arizona Cardinals defensive lineman Calais Campbell, New York Giants quarterback Russell Wilson, Pittsburgh Steelers defensive lineman Cameron Heyward and Jacksonville Jaguars defensive lineman Arik Armstead.
Campbell, Wilson and Heyward are all 36 or older, so there’s a chance that list gets cut even further over the next couple seasons.
