Why Dak Prescott has a special patch on the front of his Cowboys jersey

Dak Prescott has quite the occupied front of his Dallas Cowboys jersey.

He’s got his signature number 4, of course, but above that, there are a pair of patches.

One of them is the captain’s ‘C’. The other?

That’s the Walter Payton Man of the Year Award patch.

And on Thanksgiving, every player is also wearing a John Madden patch.

Why does Dak Prescott have a patch on his jersey?

This patch was given to Prescott when he won the Walter Payton Man of the Year Award for the 2022 season.

The NFL instituted a rule in 2017 that allows winners of the prestigious award to wear the patch on their uniform.

The league considers the Walter Payton Man of the Year the most prestigious honor it gives out.

The award is given out annually to honor a player’s commitment to philanthropy and community impact.

It was previously just called the NFL Man of the Year Award.

Payton, the Chicago Bears’ legendary running back, won that award in 1977.

Shortly after Payton’s death, the award was named in his honor.

The patch resembles the trophy, which was created in 1969, showing a caped lineman standing alone on the sideline.

Prescott and Russell Wilson are among a handful of active players who have the patch.
